Every Free VPN Service Tried and Tested

With so much identity theft, spying, and government censorship on the internet today, it's never been more important to have access to a VPN. The only problem is good VPN's cost money. But what about free VPN's?

In our search to find the best free VPN's around, we've tested virtually every service available. And managed to narrow them down to a final few which are more than suitable for occasional use.

All the free VPN's in our list work great for unblocking a website or securing public Wi-Fi hotspots. Some of them even allow P2P filesharing and have quite generous monthly data caps.

Before you take a look at them though, remember that a free VPN will never match a paid VPN for features. And having a data cap means you'll soon reach the usage limits of the free VPN if you use it on a daily basis.

Security can also be an issue with free VPN's because they use weaker encryption methods and may log users browsing activity to sell to advertisers and other 3rd parties.

What's the difference between a free VPN and a paid VPN?

Apart from the monthly data cap which is obviously the biggest difference. Free VPN's don't have some important features that you get with a paid VPN.

For example, free VPN users don't usually have access to the VPN's dedicated streaming servers. Which means you can't watch any Netflix or Hulu shows using a free VPN.

Security can be an issue too. Paid VPN's offer multiple security options such as L2TP or the highly secure OpenVPN. And they come with built-in military grade 256-bit AES data encryption. Free VPN's, however, often only work with PPTP which is no longer considered a secure protocol. And free VPN's often only have 128-bit AES data encryption.

Free VPN servers are also notoriously unreliable due to the large number of people using the same few servers. Some free VPN services have millions of users and it's not uncommon for connection speeds to drop significantly at busy times and occasionally go down altogether.

Which free VPN should I choose?

The available features of each free VPN service can differ quite widely. So, which one should you choose?

Our first recommendation for a free VPN is ExpressVPN. Although it's not technically a free VPN because you still have to sign up for a premium account. ExpressVPN operates a no questions asked 30-day money-back guarantee. Which allows you to use the premium features of a top-rated VPN completely free for a month.

ExpressVPN will meet any requirement someone might have for a VPN. But if you'd prefer to use a permanently free VPN instead, you will need to compromise and choose the one most suited to your needs. For example, do you need to use P2P? That narrows your choices if you do. Very few free VPN's work with torrenting.

Something else to consider is how often you need to use the free VPN. If you only need to use it briefly once or twice a week, then you don't need to worry about how much free data you get. If you need to use the free VPN every day, however, you'll quickly burn through your free data so pick a VPN with as much free data as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I connect to a VPN?

Connecting to a VPN is easy. Once you've downloaded and installed the VPN app for your device. Open the app and create a free account by completing the registration form. Usually, all that's required for a free account is an email address and password. When you have your account created all you need to do now is log in and choose the server you want to connect to. And that's all there is to it. You now have an encrypted and secure Internet connection.

  • Can I use a free VPN with my mobile device?

Yes, you can. All of our recommended free VPN services have apps for android and IOS devices. Before you choose a free VPN though, you should first check they have an app for your device and that the app is available to free users.

  • What happens after I've used all my monthly data allowance?

When your free monthly data runs out, the VPN service will immediately disconnect you from their servers. This means you will no longer have an encrypted connection and the websites you visit can see your real IP address and other identifying information again. If you wish to continue using the VPN, you can sign up to a premium account by upgrading through the VPN app.

  • Will I be able to stream US Netflix with a free VPN?

Unfortunately, no. Although you can visit the Netflix website using a free VPN when you attempt to watch something Netflix displays an error message letting you know they detected an unblocker or proxy. This is the case with all the free VPN's we tested.

If you need to access Netflix using a VPN, you'll need to sign up to a paid plan. Take a look at our premium VPN top picks page for more details. All of our premium VPN recommendations work with Netflix, but the best of them all is ExpressVPN.
